- Unreal: The writer romanticizes, alters, and skims over the negatives as in Pretty Woman.
- Real: These deal realistically with love, families, health, drugs, and other aspects of the human condition, rough parts and all. (Requiem for a Dream uses a "real" style.)
- Surreal: These present a distorted, often spooky view of reality, as in Blue Velvet, Groundhog Day, and most of the Coen Brothers movies (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, etc.) Superhero stories also fall into this category.
