crew positions
Below is a brief description of the different crew positions we will fill during our class. Each production team will have each crew position.
director
comes up with an overall vision for the film, supervises and collaborates with other crew members to realize that vision, casts the actors, directs and rehearses the actors, has a say in how the budget will be spent, should be good at delegating
job during pre-production: write a vision statement, hold auditions, rehearse the actors

assistant director (a.d.)
creates the schedule, makes sure the production stays on schedule, good at time management and being efficient, s/he is the "timekeeper" and is not afraid to tell the director he must move on to the next shot
job during pre-production: creates the most efficient shooting schedule possible, aides the director

director of photography (d.p.)
also called the "cinematographer", decides how to translate the director's vision visually -- through camera composition and light, comes up with the lighting concept, during our productions s/he will also be the camera operator

assistant camera (a.c.)
assist the d.p. in any way s/he needs, may help switch out batteries or tape during production, may assist with complicated camera movies, during our production s/he will also help the d.p. brainstorm shot ideas

production designer
decides how to translate the director's vision through costumes, makeup, props, location, and set dressing; during production s/he is in charge of making sure sure props are ready, costumes are in good condition, and makeup is fresh; s/he is the head of the art department
job during pre-production: come up with a color scheme concept; create the breakdown (a list of every costume, prop, location needed); find a way to make, borrow, and/or buy the needed costumes, props and makeup; scout locations and get release forms signed

art department
helps the production designer; may specialize in costumes, props, makeup, and/or locations; in our production this will probably two people
job during pre-production: brainstorms with the production designer on the color scheme concept; helps the production designer create the breakdown (a list of every costume, prop, location needed); helps the production designer make, borrow, and/or buy the needed costumes, props and makeup; helps the production designer scout locations and get release forms signed

sound
this may include being the boom operator, making sure levels are good, making sure unwanted noise doesn't ruin the shot, securing lavalier microphones if they are used
job during pre-production: learn the sound equipment, help out with other departments as needed

gaffer/lights
executes the d.p.'s lighting concept; during production s/he may hold bounce boards, set up lights, and/or change bulbs

behind-the-scenes documentarian
takes photos and video footage of pre-production and production to be made into a featurette
